Wharton Tiers Ensemble
“KABOOM!”
Wharton Tiers is a central figure in the history of experimental, underground, and alternative rock in New York City. After moving to Manhattan from Philadelphia in 1976, Tiers soon found himself in the thick of downtown’s free-wheeling, confrontational No Wave scene, as drummer for Theoretical Girls, a band fronted on guitar by the late avant-garde composer Glenn Branca. Working from his (literally underground) Fun City Studios, Tiers, over an illustrious 30-year career, produced scores of seminal albums by the cream of New York’s experimental and alternative groups, including Sonic Youth, White Zombie, Swans, and DinosaurJr.
Debuting in 1996 with BrighterThan Life, Wharton Tiers Ensemble has since released Twilight Of The ComputerAge (1998),FredomNow!(2013), ATransendance(2014), and now,KABOOM! the instrumental group’s first vinyl LP Recorded live at Fun City over several years, and boasting a roster of nearly a dozen musicians, KABOOM! also features two brand-new recordings, among them a ripping remake of the epic “Sheet Metal Workers”from Brighter Than Life. Give it a spin and prepare to be blown away!
